A Bananas Foster Recipe That’ll Make You Drool

Bananas? Check. Alcohol? Check. Spices? Check. Ice cream? SIGN.ME.UP. I’ll be the first to admit that despite my love for bananas foster, I’ve never actually attempted to make it before. I have no idea why I was always under the impression that it’s a hard dessert to make, but apparently all it takes is your husband getting surgery to put you on home nurse duty, and BAM, your kitchen senses start tingling. I started by googling a few recipes, namely this one, and modified as my heart desired. This gooey treat is so dang easy to make and turned out far better than I could have imagined. Without further kurfluffery (can I get a spell check?) I present to you, bananas a la foster.

Serving Size:
2-4
Time:
20 min
Difficulty:
Easy

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup (4 tbsp) butter
  • 2/3 cup dark brown sugar (you can put in 1 cup for a sweeter finish)
  • 4 tbsp rum (it doesn’t matter what kind)
  • 1 1/2 – 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 3-4 bananas, cut lengthwise and cut into quarters (if the slices are thick, cut into smaller pieces to ensure all pieces are soft).
  • 1 pint of your favorite vanilla ice cream

Directions

  1. Grab a deep, large skillet and place over medium heat. Melt butter.
  2. When butter is melted, add in brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract (I’ve found the flavor to be richer when butter is infused with vanilla extract from the beginning of a recipe).
  3. Allow mixture to simmer for 1-2 minutes, just long enough for it to become smooth. You should see bubbles.
  4. Add in rum and stir continuously for another 1-2 minutes.
  5. Add bananas and cook for another 2-3 minutes or until the bananas soften.
  6. Place 1 scoop (or more, whatever) of bananas foster mixture into a bowl and top with 2 (or more if you want. treat yo self) scoops of vanilla ice cream into a bowl. If you add in the bananas foster over the ice cream as opposed to the other way around, the ice cream will be a bit meltier by the time you get to it.
  7. Enjoy!

*Note: you can also add in the rum after the foster mixture is removed from heat and ignite it for a more caramelized texture, but if you’re as injury prone as me, you might not need that kind of drama in your life.
