Finding The Best Cupcakes in San Diego Part 2: Babycakes

Our goal of finding the best cupcakes in San Diego continues, and this week we’re at Babycakes. We weren’t planning on including Babycakes on this list, but after finding myself next door to the Imperial Beach location, I just had to get myself a little cupcake sampler. For the wedding obviously. I was being responsible.

Located in both the Hillcrest and Imperial Beach neighborhoods, Babycakes San Diego has two locations readily available for when your next sweet tooth hits. Though both locations have a variety of flavor profiles, the flavor options are definitely not as out of the box or as extensive as Yummy Cupcakes, but honestly? The taste was significantly better. The cupcakes at Babycakes are MASSIVE, and one quick peak at their gallery has me instantly considering them for my next special occasion. These people know how to decorate cakes and cupcakes, and their bite-sized desserts are out of this world.

Keep reading to see what Babycakes had in store for us, in order from LEAST TO MOST FAVORITE!

OREO
White cake with Oreo chunks & white chocolate mousse with white chocolate mousse frosting.
I know some people hate the word “moist” with a passion. To those people I will say I’m sorry in advance, because there is no other way to describe this cupcake other than moist AF. This vanilla cake was moist, light, fluffy, buttery goodness. The catch? I honestly didn’t know this was supposed to be white chocolate until I read the description, and though we were promised Oreo pieces in the cake itself, I found this cake to be less Oreo and more vanilla topped with whipped cream. 10/10 for cake texture, but as an Oreo fan I was deeply saddened by the loss of Oreo pieces.

CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER
Chocolate Cake with Peanut Butter cream frosting
Ok. Here’s the thing. I love peanut butter as much as the next gal (or so I thought). But though this chocolate cake was equally as moist (sorry folks) as its vanilla counterpart, I must say that its peanut butter cream frosting was… dare I say… too peanut buttery? You’ll love this cake if you LOVE peanut butter and want your desserts to taste like you’re diving face first into a peanut butter jar. My PB fiends, this one is for you. Try it now and thank me later.

BLACK BOTTOM
Chocolate Cake. Cream Cheese, Chocolate Chips, Raspberry Center with cream cheese frosting
As a general rule, “surprises” in cupcakes can be quite hit or miss. But what started out as just a regular chocolate cupcake quickly turned bougie in the best way possible when I hit the bottom of the cupcake. Why, you ask?Because this cupcake’s bottom is essentially a raspberry cheesecake. INSIDE THE ALREADY DELICIOUS CUPCAKE. Let that sink in. The tartness of the raspberry, sweetness of the cocoa and cream cheese, and crunch of the chocolate chips made this something I would come back for anyday. Andy and I were both hesitant about this one given its “raspberry center” situation, but er ma gerd. The raspberry adds just the right amount of flair without overpowering the rest of the dish. RED VELVET
Chocolate cake, Cocoa with red color and cream cheese frosting
Speaking of surprises, at this point I probably shouldn’t be shook that my favorite flavor was a red velvet concoction. For all of you folks who don’t like red velvet and are about to hit me with the “but it’s just chocolate cake with food coloring”, I get it. You’re not THAT wrong. When you look past the color, this cake melts in your mouth. It has a hint of cocoa, a tart and creamy (yet not overpowering) cream cheese frosting, and quite a vibrant, fun color if I do say so myself. If you still don’t love red velvet, that’s fine too (I guess…..), but you should still try one of these anyways on your next Babycakes visit. I think you’ll be converted or your money back (wouldn’t that be nice if that’s how that worked)?

*I’ll note that I’ve also tried the SALTED CARAMEL, CARROT, & BABYCAKE flavors, and none of these compared to the 4 above. I’ve also had the peanut butter fudge brownie, which is SO rich, decadent, and creamy. It tastes like a Reeses cup on steroids, and if you’re not in the mood for cake but want something sweet, I would 10000% recommend this sweet treat.

All in all, we’ll consider Babycakes for our big event, but my heart tells me to keep on looking as we remain on the hunt for San Diego’s best cupcakery.
